Design Competition Announced
September 5th, 2016 @ IUCN World Conservation Congress

On Monday, September 5, at the IUCN World Conservation Congress, University of Hawai'i President David Lassner announced the "Make the Ala Wai Awesome" Student Design Challenge.

The University of Hawai'i seeks ideas from the brightest minds of our students and youth to help us envision an inspiring large scale, systems thinking approach towards comprehensive ecosystem restoration of the Ala Wai watershed, which encompasses key University of Hawaiʻi locations, thousands of homes and businesses, and the
Waikīkī district that drives much of our economy.  We are seeking creative integrated approaches that address flood mitigation, ecosystem restoration and preservation, community engagement, cultural connections, public private partnerships, and improvement of the visitor experience.

What we seek to accomplish:
  • Showcase innovative student design concepts to “Make the Ala Wai Awesome”
  • Increase visibility of the complex Ala Wai Watershed challenges; identify inspiring holistic approaches and partnerships
  • Demonstrate value of design challenges as a tool to unleash creative solutions
  • Engage students & youth to create integrated solutions for their future
  • Source ideas to inform Honoluluʻs 100-Resilient Cities efforts in 2017
